It gives higher-light tanks a striking colour accent and is easy to propagate from side shoots or cuttings, so it suits aquarists who want to build up their own stock over time.

Ammannia crassicaulis is an African stem plant valued for its red-brown, cognac-coloured leaves, a colouring that few midground plants hold onto without strong light. It suits aquarists running a higher-light planted tank who want a warm colour contrast against green foliage, and it gives the midground layer a defined accent once it settles in.

Its growing notes indicate it grows best in soft, slightly acidic water, and that the lower leaves need sufficient light or they will die back over time. In the display tank it stands out by its yellow-green stems, which make it easy to tell apart from other midground plants once established.

What you get: a pack of five pots of Ammannia crassicaulis, ready to plant into your substrate. Once established, it propagates easily from side shoots or cuttings, which can be replanted directly into the substrate to build up more stems.

Specification

Detail

Origin

Africa

Difficulty

Medium

Aquarium placement

Midground
