It suits planting at the pond margin or shelf and keeps ongoing care to a single trim after autumn die-back. You can buy it as a single basket-grown plant in 1 litre or 3 litre sizes, or as a pack of three 9cm potted plants for grouping together.

Anemopsis californicum, also known as Apache beads, is a marginal pond plant whose scented flowers and foliage can be dried for potpourri once flowering is over, a second use most marginal plants don't offer. It's suited to planting at the pond margin or on a shelf, and it keeps ongoing care to a single trim once the foliage has died back in autumn.

What you get depends on which size you order. The 1 litre option gives you one plant already growing in a 1 litre mesh aquatic basket, the 3 litre option gives you one plant in a 3 litre mesh aquatic basket, and the 9cm pot option gives you three separate plants, each in its own 9cm pot, for planting as a group.

Historically, the plant was traded in Mexican markets under the Apache beads name, where it was credited with warding off malaria and other ailments; that's a traditional association recorded in its history rather than a modern treatment claim, and the flowers and leaves are better known today for drying into potpourri.

Specification

Detail

Sun/Shade

Full sun to part shade

Flowering period

June to August

Flower colour

White

Growth rate

Medium

Care instructions

Needs little maintenance; trim just above the water surface once the foliage has died back in autumn.

What's included

1 litre: one plant in a 1 litre mesh aquatic basket. 3 litre: one plant in a 3 litre mesh aquatic basket. 9cm pot (pack of 3): three plants, each in its own 9cm pot.

Height

15-40 cm

Planting depth

0-15 cm

Flowers

Jun to Aug

Colour

White

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0922/0610/4949/files/anemopsis-californicum-apache-beads-marginal-pond-plant.jpg?v=1791617024
