Grown under medium to high lighting, it gives background and midground areas a point of visual interest that plain green stem plants don't provide. Suited to aquarists at any stage, from newly planted tanks to established aquascapes.

Bacopa salzmannii 'Purple' is a stem plant that shows genuine purple tones through its green foliage, a colour note most background stem plants don't offer. It's supplied as a pack of five pots, ready to divide into stem cuttings and plant into a freshwater aquascape. The plant suits aquascapers who want a point of colour contrast rather than another shade of green, and the purple intensifies under medium to high lighting, giving the display a bolder, more layered look.

Native to South American wetlands, it adapts well to typical planted-tank conditions. It's generally placed toward the background of a layout, though the same stems also work in the midground where more height variation and colour are wanted.

Growth is moderate, which keeps trimming manageable and makes the plant easy to shape as the aquascape develops. A nutrient-rich substrate and regular fertilising keep growth steady, and CO2 addition is worth considering if you want to push growth rate and colour further.

New plants come from simple stem cuttings, so a single pot can be divided and replanted as it fills in. It's described as a plant that works well for aquarists at different stages of experience, from those building a first planted tank through to more deliberate aquascaping projects.

Specification

Detail

Origin

South America

Difficulty

Easy

Aquarium placement

Background

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0922/0610/4949/files/bacopa-salzmannii-purple-potted-aquarium-plant.jpg?v=1792442556
