It helps build a natural, low-maintenance border, needing only one trim after its foliage dies back in autumn. Choose a single potted plant in a 1 litre or 3 litre mesh basket, or a pack of three young plants in 9cm pots.

Carex acuta is a native British sedge that forms tall, tufted clumps along rivers, streams and lake margins across the British Isles. It suits pond owners putting together a naturalistic, wildlife-friendly edge, where its upright growth stands out against lower-growing marginals. The plant helps achieve that look with little day-to-day care, since it only needs cutting back once its foliage has died down each autumn.

What you receive depends on the size chosen. The 1 litre and 3 litre options each come as a single plant already growing in a mesh aquatic basket, while the pack of three arrives as three smaller plants, each in its own 9cm pot. What sets this sedge apart from many shorter marginals is its mature height, which gives it a presence other low-growing plants can't match, along with its status as a genuine native species for anyone favouring indigenous planting.

It flowers between May and August, producing brown flower heads, and grows at a medium rate rather than spreading aggressively. Out of season, plants may still be available but could arrive cut back, so don't be surprised if growth looks minimal on arrival at that time of year.

Specification

Detail

Sun/Shade

Full sun to part shade

Flowers

May to Aug

Colour

Brown

Growth rate

Medium

Care instructions

Little maintenance is required.
