carex-pendula-pendulous-sedge-native-marginal-pond-plant
Carex pendula (Pendulous Sedge) - Native Marginal Pond Plant

A weeping native sedge for pond margins, Carex pendula helps soften hard edging with its mound of trailing foliage and suits streamside or wildlife-style planting schemes. It needs little regular care once settled in, just a single tidy-up trim each autumn. Available as a single potted plant in two sizes or as a pack of three young plants for covering more of the margin at once.

Carex pendula, commonly called pendulous sedge, is a native British marginal plant whose leaves arch upward before falling into a loose, weeping mound, a softer silhouette than most upright pond grasses. This trailing habit helps break up hard pond edging and gives the margin a more natural, streamside feel. It suits informal ponds, bog gardens and wildlife-style planting where a relaxed native shape works better than a clipped, formal one.

Come midsummer it sends up slender flower spikes above the foliage, a subtle detail among the mounded leaves rather than a showy bloom. Once established, it fills out a planting gap within a season, so a single plant doesn't take long to look settled.

You get a ready-grown plant, already in the pot or basket the size description specifies, not bare roots or seed. Options range from a single plant in a mesh basket through to a pack of three smaller potted plants, so you can choose between fewer, more established specimens or more plants to cover a longer stretch of margin.

Ongoing care stays minimal once it's established in the margin; see the care guidance below for the one seasonal job it does need.

Specification

Detail

Sun/Shade

Full sun to part shade

Flowers

July and August

Colour

Brown

Growth rate

Fast

Care instructions

Little maintenance required; trim back to just above the water surface once foliage has died down in autumn.

Native

Native (UK native plant)

What's included

1 litre: one plant in a 1 litre mesh aquatic basket. 3 litre: one plant in a 3 litre mesh aquatic basket. 9cm pot (pack of 3): three plants, each in a 9cm pot.

Height

40-60 cm

Planting depth

0-15 cm

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0922/0610/4949/files/carex-pendula-pendulous-sedge-native-marginal-pond-plant.jpg?v=1791618215
