echinodorus-x-barthii
Echinodorus x barthii

A tall, red-leaved rosette plant suited to the back of large aquariums, giving colour contrast against greener planting as its new growth ages from deep red to dark green.

Echinodorus x barthii is a solitary background plant for large aquariums, with young leaves opening a deep red before ageing to dark green, the same colour transition that once saw it sold as 'Double Red'. It gives you a tall, colourful centrepiece for the rear of bigger tanks, reaching 25-50 cm in height with a rosette that spreads 20-30 cm wide. The look suits aquascapers who want strong colour contrast rather than a uniform green layout.

Colour intensity depends on lighting and nutrient levels: strong light and plenty of micronutrients bring out the deepest reds, while CO2 addition and a nutrient-rich substrate speed up overall growth. Because it's a tall, leafy plant, it will shade anything planted underneath, so it needs the odd prune to keep light reaching the rest of the tank.

You can buy it as a pack of five standard pots or as a single XL mother plant supplied in a 9 cm square pot for a larger starting specimen. Either option is supplied live, ready to place as a background feature in a large planted tank.

Specification

Detail

Origin

Cultivar

Difficulty

Easy

Aquarium placement

Background

Format notes (XL mother plant)

Large motherplant, grown in a 9 cm square pot.

Format notes

XL mother plant: Large motherplant, grown in a 9 cm square pot.
