It establishes gradually and needs little upkeep once settled in, beyond trimming back excess growth from time to time. Choose a single 1 litre potted plant or a pack of three smaller 9cm pot plants for grouping along the margin.

Hippuris vulgaris is a native marginal pond plant valued for its upright, bottle-brush stems that rise straight out of the water rather than spreading across the surface like many marginals. It suits pond margins and bog gardens where a vertical line is wanted among rounder, lower-growing plants. Grown at the pond edge, it gives the planting scheme structure and keeps maintenance light once established.

The 1 litre option gives you one plant already potted in its own mesh aquatic basket, ready to place straight into the margin. The 9cm pot option is sold as a pack of three plants, each in its own 9cm pot, suited to grouping together for a fuller display.

As a slow-growing plant, it won't quickly outgrow its space, and ongoing care is limited to trimming back any excess growth as it appears.

Specification

Detail

Sun/Shade

Full sun to part shade

Flowers

Jun to Aug

Colour

Brown

Growth rate

Slow

Care instructions

Little maintenance is required.
