Regular trimming keeps growth low and compact, and the bright green foliage helps nearby red-leaved plants stand out by contrast.

Hottonia palustris is a stem plant whose many curved shoots carry fanned, light green leaves that knit together into a close, bushy clump rather than growing as a single upright stem. This growth habit gives it a naturally full, space-filling shape that helps bridge the gap between shorter foreground plants and taller specimens further back. It suits newer aquarium keepers as a forgiving option, and anyone wanting a plant that spreads sideways rather than straight up.

Its bright green colouring works well against red-leaved plants nearby, lifting the contrast between the two. Native to both Europe and Asia, it spreads into a wide clump rather than growing tall and narrow, which is what makes it useful as a transition planting.

Each stem reaches 4-6 cm in width and 10-30 cm in height, though regular trimming of the longer shoots keeps it compact. Cutting back encourages new growth from the base of the plant, so the clump stays dense rather than thinning out as it ages.

You get Hottonia palustris supplied either as a pack of five pots or as a pack of three 1-2-Grow! cups, depending on which option you choose.

Specification

Detail

Origin

Europe/Asia

Difficulty

Easy

Aquarium placement

Midground

1-2-Grow!
