Its small, vivid green leaves on upright stems help you build a tight carpet effect, and pressing the mat down by hand encourages it to spread sideways rather than grow tall. It's supplied as either a pack of five pots or a pack of three 1-2-Grow! cups, so you can pick the starting point that suits your setup.

Hydrocotyle tripartita is a fast-growing carpet plant native to South-East Asia, and this listing is the compact variant that many aquascaping forums know as Hydrocotyle sp. 'Japan'. It's distinguished from the standard species by smaller, more intensely green leaves and a tighter growth habit, carried on upright stems rather than a loose mat.

It suits aquascapers who want a low, dense groundcover along the front of a planted tank, rather than a taller background or mid-ground plant. This habit helps you build a tidy, even carpet instead of a straggly stem planting.

It's supplied as either a pack of five pots, which divide easily into smaller portions for planting, or as a pack of three 1-2-Grow! cups, giving you a choice of starting point for your aquarium. See the format options below for more on each.

Left alone it grows into a carpet around 5-10 cm tall. Pressing the mat down by hand during routine maintenance (a technique the grower refers to as mechanical retardation) encourages it to spread outward and stay low and dense instead of growing upward.

Specification

Detail

Origin

Asia

Difficulty

Medium

Aquarium placement

Foreground

1-2-Grow!
