It arrives in its growing basket in a 3 litre pot, so you can place it straight onto the shelf without repotting, and the brown-marked yellow flowers that follow add further interest through summer.

Iris pseudacorus 'Variegata' is a variegated-leaf cultivar of the native yellow flag iris, grown as a marginal plant for pond shelves and pond-edge borders. What sets it apart is the early foliage: young leaf fans open striped in cream and green, a look the plain green-leaved species doesn't have, before settling back to green as the season goes on. It suits pond margins and boggy ground where other marginal plants already thrive, offering a stretch of variegated colour ahead of the yellow, brown-marked flowers that open in summer.

Each plant comes in a 3 litre pot, already established in its mesh growing basket. Because that basket doesn't need removing, you simply stand the whole pot on the pond shelf at the right depth, with no repotting involved.

It tolerates both sunny and shadier spots around the pond, so there's flexibility in where you position it, and it grows at an easy, unhurried pace rather than needing frequent cutting back to control its size. Height and planting depth for positioning it on the shelf are listed in the specification table below.

Specification

Detail

Sun/Shade

Full sun to part shade

Flowering season

June and July

Flower colour

Yellow

Growth rate

Medium

RHS Award of Garden Merit

Yes

Toxicity

Harmful if eaten

Height

50-100 cm

Planting depth

0-15 cm

Flowers

Jun & Jul

Colour

Yellow

RHS AGM

True

Harmful

Harmful if eaten

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0922/0610/4949/files/iris-pseudacorus-variegata-variegated-yellow-flag-iris-pond-plant-3.jpg?v=1791638317
https://aquaticshub.co.uk/products/iris-pseudacorus-variegata-variegated-yellow-flag-iris-pond-plant-3-litre
