juncus-effusus-marginal-pond-plant
Juncus effusus Marginal Pond Plant

A fast-growing, evergreen marginal suited to pond margins and boggy edges where an upright, rush-like feature is wanted. It helps fill out a planting area on its own, since it spreads by creeping rhizomes and can self-seed over time. Available as a single plant in a 1 litre or 3 litre mesh basket, or as a pack of three young plants in 9cm pots. The stems keep their shape through winter rather than dying back, giving a visible presence at the water's edge all year.

Juncus effusus is a native UK marginal pond plant with a fast, clump-forming habit. It spreads by creeping rhizomes and can self-seed, so a single planting is able to fill out an area over time without buying more plants.

It suits pond margins and boggy edges where an upright, grass-like feature is wanted. Being evergreen, it helps keep a visible green structure at the water's edge through the colder months rather than leaving bare ground.

The 1 litre and 3 litre options are supplied as a single plant already potted into a matching mesh aquatic basket, so they can go straight onto a pond shelf. The 9cm pot option is sold as a pack of three young plants, each in its own 9cm pot, which still need potting into a mesh basket before planting out.

The stems have a long practical history: traditionally cut for matting, and this rush is thought to be the type once strewn across floors during performances of Shakespeare's plays.

Specification

Detail

Sun/Shade

Full sun to part shade

Flowers

June to August

Colour

Brown

Growth rate

Fast

Evergreen

Yes

Care instructions

Evergreen; trim in early spring to encourage new growth

Native

UK native species

What's included

1 litre: one plant in a 1 litre mesh aquatic basket. 3 litre: one plant in a 3 litre mesh aquatic basket. 9cm pot, pack of 3: three plants, each in a 9cm pot.

Height

30-60 cm

Planting depth

0-15 cm
