juncus-effusus-spiralis-corkscrew-rush-marginal-pond-plant
Juncus effusus spiralis - Corkscrew Rush Marginal Pond Plant

Juncus effusus spiralis brings a twisting, corkscrew-shaped stem to the pond margin, giving planting schemes a distinctive shape that straight-leaved rushes don't offer. Being evergreen, it helps keep colour and structure in a small pond right through the colder months, with just a spring trim needed to bring on fresh growth. It suits anyone planting the shallow edge of a smaller pond who wants an unusual focal point that establishes without much fuss. Choose a single plant in a 1 litre or 3 litre basket, or a pack of three young plants in 9cm pots.

Juncus effusus spiralis is a corkscrew-leaved form of rush, its cylindrical foliage spiralling into tight twists instead of growing straight, which is what sets this variety apart from a standard rush planting.

It's evergreen, so it keeps its colour and shape in the pond margin even through winter, rather than dying back like many marginals. It suits smaller ponds well, working as a textural accent at the shallow edge rather than a dominant centrepiece, given its slow, compact growth.

It's a good match for anyone planting the margins of a compact pond who wants something more characterful than a plain marginal grass. You get either a single plant in its own 1 litre or 3 litre mesh aquatic basket ready to place in the pond, or three younger plants supplied in 9cm pots as a pack, which you'll need to pot into a mesh basket yourself before planting.

Beyond the twisted foliage, it flowers through the summer months and tolerates a range of light conditions, from full sun through to part shade, giving some flexibility in where it goes around the pond. Growth is slow and compact, so it holds its place in a scheme rather than needing frequent cutting back to control size.

Specification

Detail

Sun/Shade

Full sun to part shade

Flowers

June to August

Colour

Brown

Growth rate

Slow

Evergreen

Yes

Care instructions

Evergreen; trim back in early spring to encourage fresh new growth

What's included

1 litre: one plant in a 1 litre mesh aquatic basket. 3 litre: one plant in a 3 litre mesh aquatic basket. 9cm pot (pack of 3): three plants, each in a 9cm pot.

Height

25-45 cm

Planting depth

0-10 cm

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0922/0610/4949/files/juncus-effusus-spiralis-corkscrew-rush-marginal-pond-plant.jpg?v=1791707352
