juncus-ensifolius-marginal-pond-plant
Juncus ensifolius Marginal Pond Plant

A slow-growing marginal rush with slender green leaves and clusters of very dark brown seed heads, suited to pond shelves and margins where you want a plant that keeps a tidy shape rather than spreading. It helps add texture and dark seasonal colour to a planting scheme with little ongoing attention. Available either as a single plant already growing in a 1 litre mesh aquatic basket, or as a pack of three young plants each in a 9cm pot.

Juncus ensifolius is a marginal rush grown for its narrow, grass-like foliage and clusters of very dark brown seed heads, the feature behind its common name and what sets it apart from plainer pond grasses. It suits anyone planting up shallow pond shelves or margins who wants a plant that holds its shape, since it grows slowly rather than spreading across the area.

What you receive depends on the option you choose. The 1 litre size gives you one plant already established in a 1 litre mesh aquatic basket, ready to place at the margin. The 9cm pot option gives you a pack of three younger plants, each in its own 9cm pot, suited to establishing several clumps or a wider area.

It grows well in a range of light, from sunny spots through to areas with some shade during the day. Ongoing care is minimal: once the foliage has died back in autumn, trim it back close to the water surface, leaving a little growth in place to protect the new shoots underneath.

Specification

Detail

Sun/Shade

Full sun to part shade

Flowers

Jul & Aug

Colour

Brown

Growth rate

Slow

Care instructions

Little maintenance is required.
