littorella-uniflora
Littorella uniflora

Littorella uniflora is a creeping foreground plant that spreads by runners into a thick carpet of fleshy, grass-like leaves, suiting aquarists who want low ground cover without demanding light requirements. It helps fill the front of a planted tank, terrarium or garden pond with a naturalistic mat that tolerates reduced lighting, though leaves grow longer when light is dim. You receive a pack of three 1-2-Grow! tissue-culture portions, ready to be separated into individual rosettes for planting a few centimetres apart.

Littorella uniflora is a rosette-forming plant that grows wild on lakeshores across Europe, North America and South America, and its fat, fleshy leaves give it a distinctly chunkier look than many other carpeting species once established. In the aquarium it is grown purely as a foreground carpet plant.

Each rosette is planted on its own, spaced a few centimetres apart, and the plant sends out runners that gradually knit the individual plants into a continuous mat. Over time this produces the carpet's characteristic texture of fat, fleshy leaves rather than a fine lawn.

Light tolerance is one of its more useful traits: it copes with lower light intensities, which helps if your setup isn't brightly lit, but the leaves will grow longer under those conditions rather than staying short and compact. Brighter light keeps the carpet lower and denser.

You get a pack of three 1-2-Grow! tissue-culture portions, which you divide into individual rosettes before planting. The leaves are delicate and easily damaged, so maintenance around the carpet (trimming, cleaning, gravel vacuuming) needs a careful hand.

Beyond standard aquariums, it's also suited to terrariums and garden ponds, making it a flexible option if you're planting more than one type of water feature.

Specification

Detail

Origin

Cosmopolitan

Difficulty

Easy

Aquarium placement

Foreground

AquaticsHub
1-2-Grow!
