Its foliage shifts from a darker, purple-backed leaf out of water to a lighter green once it settles in underwater, giving your layout a soft colour contrast against other greenery. Left to grow above the waterline, it rewards you with scarlet flowers and leaves that return to their original colouring.

Lobelia cardinalis is a stem plant whose foliage changes colour between its nursery stage and its life underwater, starting dark green with a purple underside before settling into a lighter green once established in the aquarium. That shift gives background planting real depth and is one reason it turns up repeatedly in the massed "plant street" style of Dutch aquascaping, where several stem species are planted in rows for a layered effect.

It suits the rear of planted tanks, where its height gives it room to grow, and it also works in garden ponds. If you keep it in an open-topped or low-water tank, allowing the stems to grow above the surface lets the plant flower and regain its original leaf colouring, something that won't happen if it stays fully submerged.

You receive a pack of five pots of Lobelia cardinalis, with roots already established in growing medium and ready to go straight into substrate.

Specification

Detail

Origin

North America

Difficulty

Easy

Aquarium placement

Background
