mazus-reptans-marginal-pond-plant
Mazus reptans Marginal Pond Plant

Mazus reptans is a low, spreading marginal plant that knits itself into a dense mat along the edge of a pond, helping cover bare basket soil or soil at the waterline. Native to the Himalayas, it suits a sunny spot or one with some shade. Choose a single plant in a 1 litre or 3 litre mesh basket for an established look straight away, or a pack of three 9cm pot plants to spread the planting over a wider area.

Mazus reptans is a low-growing marginal plant that spreads sideways rather than growing upright, forming a dense flowering mat across pond margins and basket tops. Native to the Himalayas, it suits planting at the pond edge or on a shelf where you want ground cover rather than height.

It grows happily in a sunny position or one with some shade, and flowers through spring into summer, giving colour at the water's edge for several months. It spreads gradually rather than taking over quickly, which makes it easier to manage in a smaller pond.

You get a single potted plant in a 1 litre or 3 litre mesh aquatic basket, ready to place straight onto a pond shelf, or a pack of three young plants in 9cm pots if you would rather start smaller and spread the planting across a wider area. The mesh baskets on the 1 litre and 3 litre sizes stay in place at planting, there is no need to remove them, while the 9cm pot plants need potting into a mesh basket of your own before going into the water.

It needs very little attention once established: an occasional trim keeps the mat looking tidy, and otherwise it largely looks after itself.

Specification

Detail

Light requirements

Full sun to part shade

Flowering period

May to August

Flower colour

Purple

Growth rate

Slow

Care

Low maintenance; trim foliage to tidy if required.

What's included

1 litre: one plant in a 1 litre mesh aquatic basket. 3 litre: one plant in a 3 litre mesh aquatic basket. 9cm pot (pack of 3): three plants, each in a 9cm pot.

Height

2-5 cm

Planting depth

0-5 cm

Sun/Shade

Full sun to part shade

Flowers

May to Aug

Colour

Purple

Care instructions

Low maintence.
