It copes with a range of water conditions, which helps it settle into an established tank without much fuss. Regular thinning of the oldest and surface leaves keeps new growth coming through strongly.

Nymphoides hydrophylla 'Taiwan' is a rosette-forming aquarium plant that originates from southern Taiwan, a variant marked out by its many underwater leaves and intense, almost transparent light-green colouring. This dense underwater growth helps fill out the background of a planted tank as the plant establishes itself. It suits aquarists building a background layer who want strong colour contrast against darker midground and foreground planting.

You receive the live plant either as a pack of five pots or as a pack of three 1-2-Grow! cups, so you can choose whichever starting point suits how you plan to introduce it to your aquarium.

Growth is fast, so this isn't a plant you can leave untouched: the oldest leaves and any that reach the surface need thinning out regularly to keep the display tidy. It copes with a range of water conditions, but for its best growth it needs a well-fed, nutrient-rich tank.

New growth develops from the plates of older leaves, so material removed during thinning can be used to start further plants. It holds its place well as a background specimen without overwhelming a tank's layout.

Specification

Detail

Origin

Asia

Difficulty

Easy

Aquarium placement

Background

1-2-Grow!
