pilularia-globulifera-pillwort-native-pond-fern
Pilularia Globulifera (Pillwort) - Native Pond Fern

A native UK fern suited to pond margins, shallow water and damp ground, available as one ready-potted plant or a multi-pack for wider coverage. Its slow-growing, hair-like foliage keeps maintenance light and adds natural-looking ground cover without flowers to manage.

Pilularia globulifera, known as pillwort, is a UK native fern whose curled, hair-like leaves set it apart from the broader-leaved marginals most pond ranges stock, and it grows just as happily fully submerged as it does in damp ground at the water's edge.

It suits shallow pond margins, boggy borders and damp ground generally, helping bring low native ground cover to spots where taller flowering marginals would look out of scale. Its growth rate is slow, so established plants need little day-to-day attention once they've settled in.

Buy it as a single plant already potted in a 1 litre mesh aquatic basket, ready to lower straight into the pond, or as a pack of three plants each supplied in a 9cm pot if you want to plant up a wider area in one go.

Because it produces no flowers, the plant's appeal sits entirely in its fern-like, slightly contorted foliage, a different look from the colourful flowering marginals usually planted at pond edges.

Specification

Detail

Sun/Shade

Full sun to part shade

Flowers

None

Colour

Green

Growth rate

Slow

Care instructions

Little maintenance is required.

Native

Native

What's included

1 litre: one plant in a 1 litre mesh aquatic basket; 9cm pot, pack of 3: three plants each in a 9cm pot.

Height

5-10 cm

Planting depth

0-30 cm

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0922/0610/4949/files/pilularia-globulifera-pillwort-native-pond-fern.jpg?v=1791809175
