Format)

Salvinia minima is a small floating fern suited to open-top aquariums that could use some surface cover. It helps keep algae down by shading the water and drawing on the nutrients algae would otherwise use. Each plant stays compact, around 1-3 cm, but multiplies quickly into a floating mat once light and nutrients are plentiful.

Salvinia minima is a small floating fern whose leaves carry a layer of fine hairs that keep them water-resistant, so the plant sits proud on the surface rather than waterlogging and sinking.

Floating in groups, it shades the water beneath it, which helps limit the light reaching algae and any plants growing lower in the tank. It also takes up nutrients from the water column, leaving less available for algae to use.

It's intended for open aquariums, tanks without a lid or cover, where it can spread freely across the surface. Give it good light and a steady nutrient supply and it grows quickly, building into a dense floating mat; under those same favourable conditions it's capable of growing very large, as it does in the wild.

Individual plants are small, generally 1-3 cm, so keep an eye on leaf colour as the mat develops. Pale leaves are generally a sign the water is short on micronutrients.

What you get: a pack of three cups in the 1-2-Grow! format. The number of plants in each cup isn't specified, so get in touch if you need a particular amount.

Specification

Detail

Origin

Cosmopolitan

Difficulty

Easy

Aquarium placement

Fast-growing and floating

AquaticsHub
1-2-Grow!
