scirpus-lacustris-native-marginal-pond-plant
Scirpus lacustris Native Marginal Pond Plant

A native rush suited to wildlife ponds and naturalistic planting schemes, it gives wildfowl cover among its clusters of chocolate brown flowers. Choose a single 3 litre basket-grown plant or a pack of three 9cm pot plants, depending on how much of your planting area you need to cover. Fast growth means it settles into pondside schemes without a long wait.

Scirpus lacustris is a native rush with dark green stems and clusters of chocolate brown flowers, a plant landscapers favour for native planting schemes. In a pond it gives wildfowl somewhere to shelter among its stems, which suits it to wildlife ponds and naturalistic planting designs more than purely ornamental ones.

You can buy it as a single plant already potted in a 3 litre mesh aquatic basket, ready to place straight onto a planting shelf, or as a pack of three plants each in a 9cm pot for covering a larger area. The 9cm pot plants need potting into a mesh basket before they go into the pond; the 3 litre plant is supplied in its basket already, so there's no extra step.

Because it establishes and grows quickly, gaps in pondside planting fill in without a long wait. Little upkeep is needed afterwards: once the foliage dies back for the year, a trim above the water surface keeps it tidy.

Specification

Detail

Colour

Brown

Height

100-200 cm

Native

Native

Flowers

Jul to Sep

Sun/Shade

Full sun to part shade

Growth rate

Fast

Planting depth

1-40 cm

What's included

3 litre: one plant in a 3 litre mesh aquatic basket; 9cm pot, pack of 3: three plants each in a 9cm pot.

Care instructions

Little maintenance is required.
