Growing it may help keep pond water clearer, and most ponds that contain it seem to have clear water based on general observation. Suited to wildlife ponds and native planting schemes, it's supplied as a pack of five plants.

Stratiotes aloides is a native UK pond plant that floats on the surface rather than rooting into soil or a planting basket, with long, narrow, serrated leaves that make it easy to tell apart from rounder marginal plants. Its roots trail in the water and settle best when they can reach down to the soil or mulm at the base of the pond. Growing it may help keep pond water clearer: most ponds that contain Stratiotes aloides seem to have clear water, based on general observation. It suits wildlife ponds and native planting schemes where a more natural look is wanted.

Each pack contains five plants, supplied ready to float on the pond surface. Just make sure the roots are submerged in the water when you position them, rather than left exposed above the surface.

Left to its own cycle, the old growth dies back naturally over autumn and winter, rotting away as young plants rise to the surface the following spring to start again. Being a native species, it also suits ponds where you're deliberately avoiding non-native planting.

It adapts to a range of light levels around the pond, from sunnier spots to those with some shade during the day, so there's flexibility in where you float it.

Specification

Detail

Sun/Shade

Full sun to part shade

Flowers

June to August

Colour

White

Growth rate

Medium

Care instructions

Allow to die back naturally.
