Suited to ponds where extra surface shade is wanted without a rooted or potted plant to maintain. In a good summer it also produces nuts that sink and can grow into new plants the following year.

Trapa natans is a floating pond plant that drifts across the water's surface rather than rooting into the pond bed, so there's no basket or substrate to deal with. This makes it well suited to garden ponds where extra surface shade is wanted, since the leaf cover helps reduce the light reaching the water and keep algae growth down. You get a pack of five plants, ready to place straight onto the pond with their roots trailing in the water. Through late summer it flowers, then produces nuts that sink to the pond floor in autumn; in a warm enough summer these can survive over winter and grow into new plants the following season.

Specification

Detail

Sun/Shade

Full sun to part shade

Flowers

August and September

Colour

White

Growth rate

Medium

Care instructions

Allow to die back naturally.
