It copes with sun or partial shade, so there's flexibility in where it goes, and it grows quickly once settled in.

Water mint (Mentha aquatica) is a native UK marginal plant with a strong mint scent and pinkish-lilac flower heads; it was once grown commercially for its essential oil. It suits pond edges, bog gardens and shelf planting, and gives the margin a run of purple flower colour through summer and into autumn. It tolerates sunnier or more shaded spots along the margin, so there's flexibility over where you place it.

Fast growth means it establishes and spreads quickly once planted, filling out bare patches of margin. It can be trimmed back as needed throughout the growing season, which keeps its size and shape under control.

What you get depends on the size you choose. The 1 litre and 3 litre options each supply one plant already growing in a mesh aquatic basket sized to match, while the 9cm pot option supplies three separate plants, each in its own 9cm pot rather than a basket.

Its native status and strong mint fragrance make it a straightforward marginal to add to a pond margin or bog garden, with purple flowers that keep the colour going well into the back half of the growing season.

Specification

Detail

Sun/Shade

Full sun to part shade

Flowering period

Jul to Oct

Flower colour

Purple

Growth rate

Fast

Care instructions

Can be trimmed as required at any time during the growing season.

Native status

Native

Height

30-60 cm

Planting depth

0-20 cm

Flowers

Jul to Oct

Colour

Purple

Native

Native

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0922/0610/4949/files/water-mint-mentha-aquatica-native-marginal-pond-plant.jpg?v=1791710615
