Frequently Asked Questions

How deep should I plant it?

The maximum recommended planting depth is 0 to 15cm. Start young or newly potted plants shallower than this while they establish, then move them to the fuller depth once rooted.

Is this a native plant?

Yes, it's recorded as a UK native species, which makes it a good choice for wildlife ponds as well as ornamental planting.

Do I need to repot the plant when it arrives?

9cm pot plants need potting into a mesh aquatic basket before going into the pond. 1 litre and 3 litre plants don't need repotting, though a larger basket can help bigger plants establish.

What's included with each size option?

The 1 litre and 3 litre options each come as one plant in a mesh aquatic basket of that size. The 9cm pot option is a pack of three plants, each supplied individually in a 9cm pot.

When does it flower and what colour are the flowers?

It flowers from June to August with white blooms, carried on multiple stems above the foliage.

A native marginal plant that brings height and summer flower colour to the pond edge, suited to wildlife ponds and ornamental schemes alike. It establishes well in shallow water and rewards simple deadheading with a longer flowering display. Choose from an established 1 litre or 3 litre basket plant, or a pack of three 9cm pot plants for filling several spots around the margin.

Alisma plantago aquaticum is a UK native marginal pond plant, sometimes known by the old folk name Mad Dog weed. It's grown for the tall flower stems it sends up once established, each carrying multiple small white blooms above broad, lance-shaped leaves. Because it's a true native species, it suits wildlife ponds just as well as more ornamental planting schemes.

It provides a reliable flush of summer flower for the pond margin and helps add height and structure behind lower-growing plants. The plant needs consistently moist to wet soil, so it suits planting directly at the pond edge or on a shelf rather than drier borders. Removing spent flower heads promptly encourages further blooms and stops the plant from self-seeding around the pond.

You can buy it as an established plant in a 1 litre or 3 litre mesh aquatic basket, ready to place straight into the pond, or as a pack of three smaller plants each in a 9cm pot for planting several points at once. The 9cm pot plants aren't supplied in a mesh basket, so you'll need to pot them up before placing them in water; the 1 litre and 3 litre sizes already come basket-ready.

Foliage dies back naturally in autumn and should be trimmed back then, ready for new growth the following year. Out-of-season stock may still be available but can arrive already cut back at that time of year.
