Frequently Asked Questions

Do I actually need underlay beneath my pond liner?

It's strongly recommended for any liner installation. Ground conditions change over time, so stones, roots or building rubble that weren't visible when you dug the hole can work their way to the surface later and wear through an unprotected liner.

Why not just use sand or old carpet instead?

Both are sometimes used, but each has drawbacks: sand tends to shift on sloping sides and can still let stones through, and old carpet can biodegrade over time, especially wool or mixed-fibre types, which eventually exposes the liner again. This matting is designed specifically for the job and doesn't break down the same way.

How much matting should I order?

Work out your pond's surface area and add around 10% to allow for overlapping sheets. See the sizing guidance above for a worked example.

Do I need to join sheets together for a larger pond?

No. The matting doesn't need joining or sealing, you simply overlap one sheet slightly over the next as you lay it out.

What happens if I order a length longer than 50m?

Single sheets are supplied up to 50m. Anything longer is supplied as multiple 2m wide sheets, which you lay out and overlap on site in exactly the same way as a shorter order.

Is this matting safe for my fish and pond plants?

Yes, the manufacturer's specification confirms it's safe for aquatic and plant life once installed.

Laid beneath your pond or lake liner, this underlay reduces the risk of stones, roots and rough surfaces working their way through and puncturing it, helping the liner stay watertight for longer. It's cut to length from 2m wide rolls, so you order close to what your pond actually needs rather than a fixed pre-cut size, and sheets simply overlap on site with nothing to seal. It won't rot underground, so you're not replacing it partway through your pond's life, and it's safe for the fish and plants living in the water above it.

Key benefits

  • Reduces the risk of rocks, roots and loose debris puncturing your liner, both during installation and over years of use
  • Stays put once laid, without stretching under the weight of backfill, rocks or anchoring slabs
  • No joining needed, sheets simply overlap where one length meets the next
  • Won't rot the way sand or old carpet can when used as makeshift protection
  • Safe for the fish and plants living in the water above it
  • Cut to length from 2m wide rolls so you can order close to your pond's real dimensions

Material and construction

This matting stays flat once it's laid and doesn't stretch, so it won't shift underneath backfill, rocks or slabs used to weigh down a liner's edges. It's built to last in the ground: unlike carpet fibres, which break down over time and eventually let debris back through, this synthetic material doesn't rot, so the protection stays consistent for as long as your pond is in use.

Extra protection on top

For anything other than water going directly onto the liner, such as rocks, gravel or paving slabs, laying a second sheet of this matting over the liner as well as underneath it can help keep the liner shielded from that added weight and abrasion.
