Frequently Asked Questions

Do I actually need underlay under my pond liner?

It's strongly recommended for every liner installation. Ground that looks smooth when you dig it can still bring stones, roots or sharp debris to the surface over time as soil and water levels shift, and underlay creates a barrier that protects the liner from this.

How does this compare with using sand or old carpet instead?

Sand gives a smooth surface at first but tends to shift on sloping ground, letting stones and roots work through it over time, and some sand can itself be abrasive. Old carpet resists punctures reasonably well to start with, but it can biodegrade, especially wool or mixed-fibre types, which eventually exposes the liner again. This matting is a synthetic material that doesn't rot, so it keeps doing its job for as long as the pond is in use.

How much matting should I order?

Work out your pond's surface area and add around 10% to allow for overlapping sheets, or for extra material placed under rocks or slabs. A 3m by 4m pond, for example, would need roughly 14 square metres, which could be ordered as a 2m by 7m length.

Do I need to join the sheets together?

No. You simply overlap one sheet slightly over the next, there's no gluing, taping or heat-welding involved.

Do I need a layer on top of the liner as well as underneath?

Only if you're putting anything other than water on top of the liner, such as rocks or slabs used for anchoring. In that case, a second layer of this matting laid over the liner will help keep it protected from above too.

Is it safe for my fish and pond plants?

Yes, the material is safe for fish, other aquatic life and pond plants.

aquaSHIELD 275gsm underlay creates a protective layer between your pond liner and the ground, guarding against punctures from stones, roots and sharp debris both during installation and throughout the pond's life. It's particularly useful on gritty, rocky or root-heavy ground, and is recommended alongside Elevate and EPDM liners. Sold by the running metre with no joining needed between overlapping sheets, so you can order to match your pond's exact size.

Key benefits

  • Forms a barrier between soil and liner, reducing the risk of punctures from stones, roots and rough building materials
  • Resists rot, UV exposure and general weathering, unlike sand or old carpet, which can shift, compact or biodegrade
  • Simple to lay, since sheets overlap rather than needing gluing, taping or joining on site
  • Safe for fish, other aquatic life and pond plants
  • Sold by the running metre, so you can order a length that matches your pond rather than a fixed pre-cut size

Material and construction

This underlay is a black, non-woven polypropylene fabric that doesn't stretch once laid, so it stays in place under the liner rather than shifting as the ground settles. Full weight and sizing details are listed in the specifications section below.

When to add a second layer

If you're planning to place rocks, slabs or anything else on top of the liner, for example to anchor the edges or create a beach area, it's worth ordering a second layer of this matting to lay over the liner as well. This helps keep the liner protected from above as well as below.
