What happens if I order outside the growing season?
Out-of-season plants may be supplied with the foliage cut back; this is normal and the plant will regrow.
Three young lady ferns, delivered together in 9cm pots, give you an instant clump of soft, pale green foliage for a shaded, reliably damp corner of the garden. The lacy, arching leaves fill gaps in planting and soften hard edges without ever needing to flower to earn their place.
Athyrium filix-femina is a native British fern grown for its soft, arching foliage, and it carries the RHS Award of Garden Merit, a mark of recognised garden performance. That recognition gives you some reassurance when choosing a fern for a tricky shaded spot.
It suits shaded or part-shaded ground that stays consistently damp, the kind of spot where many flowering plants struggle to establish. Grown in a loose, upright clump, it helps fill bare soil and soften harder edges through the growing season.
Each pack contains three plants, supplied together in their pots and ready to go into the ground once conditions suit. That's enough to cover a reasonable stretch of border or bed in one planting session.
Growth is steady rather than fast-spreading, so the clump stays tidy with little upkeep beyond removing old foliage as it fades. There are no flowers to deadhead, since this fern earns its place through foliage alone.
