Frequently Asked Questions

Can I plant Bolbitis heudelotii directly into my substrate?

No. The rhizome needs to stay uncovered and attached to wood or rock; burying it causes it to rot.

What's the difference between the Potted and XL mother plant options?

The XL mother plant is a larger, more developed specimen grown in a 9 cm square pot. The standard potted option is a pack of five smaller pots; their pot size isn't specified by the supplier.

Does this plant need CO2 to grow?

It isn't required, but the manufacturer states growth increases considerably with added CO2.

How do I propagate it?

By splitting the horizontal rhizome into sections once the plant is established.

What water conditions does it need?

The manufacturer states it grows best in soft, slightly acidic water.

Grown to be tied onto wood or rock instead of buried in substrate, Bolbitis heudelotii gives midground aquascapes height and a soft, translucent leaf texture while leaving the substrate layer undisturbed. It suits keepers running soft, slightly acidic water. Available as a pack of five standard pots or as a single, larger XL mother plant specimen.

Bolbitis heudelotii is a West African aquarium fern that grows attached to wood or rock instead of being planted into substrate, giving it soft, almost translucent green leaves. This growth habit allows it to add height and texture to the midground of a freshwater aquarium without the rhizome being buried, which this plant doesn't tolerate well. It suits aquascapers who want a feature plant for hardscape rather than a substrate carpet.

You get a pack of five pots of Bolbitis heudelotii in the standard format, or one XL mother plant supplied as a larger, more developed specimen for keepers who want a bigger starting point or more rhizome to divide straight away. A root or stone to tie it to, along with something like fishing line to hold it in place while it roots, aren't included and need to be sourced separately.

This is not a compact plant, so it's worth leaving room for it to spread sideways as well as up. The manufacturer states that growth increases with added CO2 and that conditions are only optimal in soft, slightly acidic water, making it a better match for softer-water setups.
