Frequently Asked Questions

What makes 'Needle Leaf' different from other Bucephalandra varieties?

It has narrower, more elongated leaves than varieties like 'diabolica' and pygmaeae, and it has slightly higher care demands, though it's still considered easy to grow.

Can I plant the rhizome in substrate?

No. The creeping rhizome must be left uncovered on wood or rock; if it's buried in substrate it will rot and die.

Does it need CO2 injection to grow?

It isn't a strict requirement. Added CO2 and a little extra light help growth along, but the plant still grows without them.

What format does the plant arrive in?

It's supplied as a pack of three cups in the 1-2-Grow! tissue-culture format, which is the only option available.

How fast does it grow?

Growth is described as slow, so it takes time to establish and spread across hardscape.

This slow-growing aquarium plant brings a fine, needle-leaved texture to hardscape features, and gives tanks a touch of colour contrast as the young rhizome takes on a reddish tinge against the green foliage. It suits aquascapers after a low-maintenance accent plant that won't need constant trimming. Supplied as a pack of three 1-2-Grow! tissue-culture cups.

Bucephalandra sp. 'Needle Leaf' is a slow-growing aquarium plant with narrow, elongated leaves that set it apart from broader-leaved Bucephalandra varieties such as 'diabolica' and pygmaeae. It suits aquascapers who want a fine, needle-like accent plant attached to hardscape rather than planted in substrate. Grown well, it gives a layout extra visual detail as new rhizome growth shows a reddish tinge against the green leaves.

Like other Bucephalandra species, it shares most of its care requirements with Anubias, even though the two naturally grow worlds apart. Adding CO2 and a little extra light than the bare minimum helps it along, though the plant still manages well without special equipment.

What you get: a pack of three cups of Bucephalandra sp. 'Needle Leaf', supplied in the 1-2-Grow! tissue-culture format.

Each leaf is under 0.5cm across and between 1 and 2cm long, elongated and slightly waved, with numerous tiny white dots across the surface. This fine leaf shape, together with the plant's slightly higher care demands than other Bucephalandra forms, is what sets 'Needle Leaf' apart in the range.
