Frequently Asked Questions

Do the plants come ready to put straight in the pond?

The 1 litre and 3 litre sizes do, since they're already growing in a mesh basket. The 9cm pot pack isn't basketed, so you'll need to pot those three plants into mesh baskets yourself before planting.

How deep should I plant it?

The overall planting depth range is 3-25cm. For new plants, start shallower, around a third of that depth for the 9cm pot size or around half for the 1 litre size, and let them establish before moving deeper.

How much care does it need once it's in the pond?

Very little. The main job is trimming it back to just above the water surface once the foliage has died down in autumn, to keep the pond tidy over winter.

Will it need repotting as it grows?

Not necessarily. The 3 litre size doesn't need repotting. But if your plant grows past 60cm, it will benefit from a larger mesh basket, or planting in gravel, to stop it toppling in the wind.

Butomus umbellatus is a native marginal pond plant whose flower umbels rise above triangular leaves that redden before turning dark green as the plant matures. It keeps pond-edge maintenance down to one autumn trim and suits a sunny spot at the margin or on a planting shelf. Buy it as an established plant already in its mesh basket (1 litre or 3 litre) or as a pack of three young plants in 9cm pots to pot up yourself.

Butomus umbellatus is a native marginal pond plant that produces umbels of flowers held well above triangular leaves, the foliage reddening early on before settling to dark green as the plant matures. That leaf colour change gives pond margins a bit of visual interest through the season, and the plant's naturally fast growth helps it settle into a new planting pocket without much fuss. It's suited to a sunny spot at the water's edge or on a planting shelf, making it a straightforward option if you're building up native planting around the pond.

Maintenance stays minimal once it's in: the main task is trimming the foliage back to just above the water surface after it dies down in autumn, which keeps things tidy going into winter.

What you receive depends on the size you choose. The 1 litre and 3 litre options are each one plant already growing in its own mesh aquatic basket of that capacity, so there's no repotting to do before placing it in the pond. The pack of three 9cm pot plants gives you three individual young plants, each in a plain 9cm pot rather than a basket; the planting notes say these need potting into a mesh basket before going into the pond, so you'll want to have baskets ready if you choose this option.
