Frequently Asked Questions

What do I actually receive in a pack?

Each pack contains five bunches of Callitriche stagnalis, supplied as loose plant material rather than potted plants.

Do I need to plant it in soil?

No. The care guidance says it can be dropped into the pond as a weighted bunch, though planting it into soil helps it establish more strongly.

Will it keep growing in winter?

It's one of the few submerged pond plants that keeps growing through autumn and winter, though like any plant its growth will naturally be slower in cold weather.

Is it suitable for a pond with fish?

Yes. Goldfish are known to feed on the young leaves, and the plant's tangled stems also shelter pond insects.

What happens if I order it out of season?

Plants may still be available out of season, but they could be supplied cut back rather than at full size.

Keeps your pond's underwater growth going through autumn and winter, when most submerged plants have stopped for the year. Goldfish feed on the soft young leaves, and the tangled stems shelter pond insects, adding wildlife interest few other plants offer this late in the season. Suited to ponds with fish and anyone wanting winter greenery below the surface, each pack gives you five bunches ready to plant or weight down.

Callitriche stagnalis is a submerged pond plant that keeps growing through autumn and winter, a trait only a handful of other oxygenators share. Most pond plants slow down or die back once the weather turns, but this one carries on regardless.

It suits ponds stocked with goldfish, since the fish are known to feed on the soft young leaves. The tangled stems also give pond insects somewhere to shelter, adding a bit more life to the water.

How the leaves sit depends on your pond. In moving water they stay below the surface, while in still, shallow water they can poke up by a centimetre or two.

Each pack contains five bunches of loose plant material rather than potted plants. You can drop a bunch straight into the pond as a weighted clump, or plant it into soil, which the care guidance says helps it root more strongly.

Because stock is seasonal, bunches ordered outside the main growing months may still be available, but could arrive cut back rather than at full length.
