Frequently Asked Questions

How deep should I plant Caltha palustris?

The recommended planting depth is 0-15cm, though new plants should start out shallower than this and be moved to their final depth once established.

Does the plant need a sunny spot?

It grows well in full sun or part shade, so it can go in sunnier or more sheltered spots around the pond margin.

What happens after flowering?

Most of the foliage dies back after the March and April flowering period; removing the dead leaves tidies the plant and can encourage a second flush of flowers.

Does the 9cm pot pack include planting baskets?

No, the 9cm pot plants come in their pots only. They will need potting into a mesh aquatic basket before going into the pond, unlike the 1 litre and 3 litre sizes which already come basketed.

Will the plant always arrive in full leaf and flower?

Outside the main growing season, plants may be supplied cut back rather than in full growth.

Caltha palustris brings early, dense yellow flowering to the pond margin, giving colour before many other marginal plants have got going. A slow-growing native plant, it suits shallow planting pockets or the pond shelf and needs little dividing once settled. Choose a single potted plant in a 1 litre or 3 litre basket, or a pack of three 9cm potted plants for covering more ground.

Caltha palustris is a native marginal pond plant that, once established, flowers so heavily in early spring it can look like a solid ball of yellow blossom. It suits pond keepers planting the shallow margins or shelf area of a pond, and gives colour at a time when many other marginal plants have barely started growing.

You get a single plant already potted in a mesh aquatic basket with the 1 litre and 3 litre sizes, or three individual plants each in a 9cm pot with the pack option. The smaller pot size is a useful way to cover more planting area without buying several larger baskets.

The plant tolerates full sun through to part shade, so there is some flexibility in where it goes around the pond edge. It is slow-growing too, meaning it will not need dividing or cutting back as often as some faster-spreading marginals.

Its mature size keeps it in scale with smaller pond margins and planting pockets, so it is unlikely to crowd out neighbouring plants once settled.
