A potted Cyperus helferi, suited to brighter planted tanks where it gives the aquascape height at the back and a natural swaying movement when water flow is good.
Cyperus helferi is one of the few aquatic members of the Cyperus genus, and it was the first Cyperus species grown successfully underwater in aquariums. Most of its relatives stay above the waterline as marginal or terrestrial plants, which makes this Thai native unusual within its own family.
Suited to planted tanks run by hobbyists already comfortable with brighter lighting and CO2-supplemented growth, it isn't the easiest starting point for a brand-new aquarium. Positioned at the back of the layout, it gives the aquascape height and an upright, grassy texture that holds its form as other plants fill in around it.
You receive a pack of five pots, ready to separate and plant into your own substrate. Left to grow undisturbed, Cyperus helferi reaches 20 to 35cm tall with a rosette spreading 15 to 25cm wide, so allow enough depth in the tank for it to reach that size.
Good water flow across the leaves makes a real difference here: in a well-circulated tank, the long leaves sway continuously in the current, giving the aquascape a natural sense of movement. CO2 addition is also recommended, since it helps promote stronger growth.
