Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the two options?

The 1 litre option is a single plant already potted in a 1 litre mesh aquatic basket. The 9cm pot option is a pack of three plants, each supplied in its own 9cm pot.

Do I need anything else to plant the 9cm pot plants?

Yes. The 9cm pot plants need potting into a mesh basket before planting, and a basket isn't included with that option. The 1 litre option already comes potted in its own mesh basket.

How much care does this plant need?

Little maintenance is required. Once the foliage has died back in autumn, trim the plant back just above the water surface, leaving a little material in place to protect the new shoots.

How deep should I plant it?

The general planting depth is 0-5 cm. To help new plants establish, start the 1 litre option no deeper than about half the maximum recommended planting depth, and the 9cm pot plants no deeper than about a third of it.

Will it still be available if I order out of season?

It may still be available out of season, but it could be supplied cut back.

Dichromena colorata is a marginal pond plant grown for its green and white star-shaped bracts, which keep the margin looking interesting long after many other pond plants have finished for the year. It suits pond keepers who want planting interest to carry on into autumn, and once settled it helps keep upkeep light, needing only one trim a year once the foliage dies back. Choose a single plant already potted in a 1 litre mesh basket, or a pack of three smaller plants in 9cm pots for filling a larger area.

Dichromena colorata is a marginal pond plant valued as a late-season performer, its star-shaped white bracts rising above grass-like green foliage to keep the display going once many other marginals have finished for the year. It suits pond keepers who want planting interest to carry through into autumn, and it gives the pond margin a point of texture and pale colour at a time when other planting has largely finished. Once established, it needs very little looking after for the rest of the season.

It settles into a steady, contained clump at the margin rather than spreading quickly, so the main upkeep each year is a single tidy-up. Once the foliage has died back in autumn, trim it back just above the water surface, leaving a little material in place to protect the new shoots underneath for next season.

What you get depends on which option you choose. The 1 litre option supplies one plant already growing in a 1 litre mesh aquatic basket, ready to go straight into the pond. The 9cm pot, pack of three option supplies three individual plants, each in their own 9cm pot; these will need potting into a mesh basket before planting, which isn't included with this option.

Both options tolerate full sun and part shade, so there's some flexibility over where you place them at the margin. Start new plants a little shallower than their long-term planting depth so they can root in before settling at their permanent position; full depth guidance for each option is set out below. Plants that grow past around 60cm in height benefit from a larger mesh basket, or planting directly into gravel, to stop them toppling in windy weather.
