A compact sword plant suited to the midground of a planted aquarium, staying small enough that it won't crowd out the plants around it as it matures. Its straightforward care needs help make midground planting approachable even for newer fishkeepers, while its textured, narrow leaves give a different look from smoother-leaved sword plant varieties nearby.
Echinodorus grisebachii 'Tropica' is a dwarf cultivar of the grisebachii sword plant, bred to stay compact rather than grow into the large leaves typical of the species. That smaller stature is what sets it apart from standard grisebachii forms and is why it works in the midground rather than the background of a tank. Growing to roughly 5 to 10 cm, it helps keep mid-tank planting in proportion on smaller or tightly scaped layouts.
It grows as a spreading rosette of narrow, obovate leaves in medium to dark green, with a slightly bullate, textured surface similar in shape to Samolus valerandi. That surface texture gives it a different visual character from smoother-leaved plants placed alongside it.
It's rated easy to grow, which suits aquarists who want a lower-maintenance option for the middle of the tank rather than a demanding centrepiece plant. It's a cultivated variety rather than a wild-collected plant, first identified in Denmark during the 1980s.
You receive a pack of three cups in the 1-2-Grow! format, the only option currently listed for this product. The number of plants in each cup isn't stated, so get in touch if you need that confirmed before ordering.
