Frequently Asked Questions

Does this moss need planting in soil?

No. It can be dropped into the pond as a weighted bunch, or tied to a stone or brick for anchorage if it's going into flowing water.

Will it survive in a pond with a stream or waterfall?

Yes. It grows in both still and fast-flowing water, provided it's anchored to something like a stone or brick when placed in moving water.

How many bunches do I get?

Each pack contains 5 bunches.

Does it lose its colour over winter?

It's evergreen, so it keeps its colour year-round, though bunches ordered out of season may arrive cut back.

Does it flower?

No, this plant doesn't produce flowers.

Fontinalis antipyretica is a greyish-green, branching pond moss suitable for ponds with still water or a flowing stream feature. It keeps its colour across the seasons, giving low-maintenance year-round cover without frequent trimming, and anchors easily once tied to a stone or similar weight. You get a pack of 5 bunches, ready to position where you want cover or texture.

Fontinalis antipyretica is a greyish-green aquatic moss with branched, trailing stems that grows equally well in still ponds and in fast-flowing water, all year round.

The plant takes its name from a traditional use in Sweden, where it was packed into gaps in chimneys and walls to block draughts and reduce the risk of fire.

It suits pond keepers who want a native plant with a steady, undemanding growth habit, so you won't need to cut it back often. It copes with a range of light levels too, from bright open spots to shadier corners of the pond.

Because the moss has no way of anchoring itself, how you introduce it depends on the water. In still water you can simply drop a weighted bunch in; in flowing water or around a stream feature, tie each bunch to a stone or brick first so it stays put.

Each pack contains 5 bunches, enough to anchor at several points around the pond or build up a denser patch of cover.
