Frequently Asked Questions
How tall does Glossostigma elatinoides grow?
How tall does Glossostigma elatinoides grow?
It typically reaches around 2-3cm, making it one of the smallest plants used in aquarium foregrounds.
Why is my Glossostigma elatinoides growing upwards instead of spreading?
Why is my Glossostigma elatinoides growing upwards instead of spreading?
This happens when light levels are too low; under weaker light the plant grows upward rather than forming a flat carpet, so stronger or clearer overhead light is needed.
How should I plant it?
How should I plant it?
Split the pot into small clumps, about one eighth of a pot each, and space these a few centimetres apart. This helps neighbouring clumps merge into a single carpet more quickly.
What format is it sold in?
What format is it sold in?
It's supplied in 1-2-Grow! format, ready for planting out.
Glossostigma elatinoides gives aquascapers a genuine low, dense carpet for Japanese-inspired layouts, rather than a plant that just sits in the foreground looking sparse. It comes in 1-2-Grow! format, so small clumps can be planted out and left to knit together into a solid mat. Strong light, CO2 addition and soft water help it spread sideways instead of growing tall and leggy.
Glossostigma elatinoides is a tiny carpet-forming plant used as a foreground feature in Japanese-inspired aquascapes, and it is one of the smallest plants grown in planted tanks. It suits aquascapers who already run strong lighting and CO2 supplementation, rather than someone setting up their first planted tank. Grown under good light, it spreads sideways and helps keep a clean, low line across the front of the layout instead of growing tall and uneven.
What you get is a pack of three 1-2-Grow! cups, ready for planting out.
At 2-3cm tall, it stays low enough to work as a true foreground carpet rather than a mid-ground filler, which is what makes it well suited to the detailed, miniature style associated with Japanese aquascaping.
If light is poor, it tends to grow upward rather than spreading, so make sure taller plants nearby aren't shading it out.
