A rosette-forming plant suited to anyone building a planted foreground, from first-time growers to more practised aquascapers. Its pale, narrow leaves give a lift of lighter colour at the front of the tank and help it stand out against darker planting further back, and in good conditions it spreads naturally across the substrate to fill out a group planting over time.
Helanthium bolivianum 'Quadricostatus' (previously catalogued as Echinodorus 'Quadricostatus') is a South American rosette plant grown mainly for its narrow, light-green leaves, a paler tone that marks it out from most other front-of-tank planting. Each leaf reaches 10-15 cm long, and the overall effect works best when several plants are grouped together rather than kept as single specimens.
Given the right conditions in the tank, it produces runners that travel across the substrate, so one planting can gradually spread into a wider patch rather than staying as isolated clumps. Each rosette widens to around 15-20 cm on its own as it matures.
What you get is the plant supplied in your choice of two formats: a pack of five pots, or a pack of three 1-2-Grow! cups. There has been some naming confusion around this plant over the years, and it has also been sold under the name Echinodorus bolivianus var. magdalenensis; if you come across either name elsewhere, it refers to the same plant.
What sets it apart is that pale leaf colour combined with its habit of spreading by runners, which together make it a practical choice for filling a foreground area with a lighter-toned carpet rather than a dense, dark one.
