Heteranthera zosterifolia is a stem plant that puts out side shoots prolifically, building into a dense, bushy clump rather than staying as a scattering of single stems. This branching habit helps it fill the midground or background of a planted aquarium once established. In strong light, growth becomes intensive, so it fills in quickly and needs cutting back before it gets so dense that the lower leaves stop getting light.
The undersides of the leaves often darken to near black, giving the foliage visible contrast against the green top side. Where stems touch the substrate or decor, water roots frequently form along them, and these sections are easily cut away and replanted to start new plants elsewhere in the tank.
