This compact native plant floats freely on the pond surface and tolerates shaded spots that many other floating plants struggle with, giving your pond natural cover without any soil or planting basket. It dies back naturally each autumn and regrows from its own winter buds the following spring, so it keeps returning without replanting.

Hydrocharis morsus-ranae is a small native floating pond plant that regenerates itself from its own winter buds, rather than needing replanting each year.

It suits ponds with shaded corners, since the plant tolerates dense shade as well as brighter conditions, keeping a cover of small kidney-shaped, bright green leaves and tiny white flowers on the surface through summer.

You get a pack of five plants that simply float onto the pond surface, you just need to make sure the roots sit in the water; no substrate or planting basket is required.

What sets it apart is its self-sufficient winter cycle: established plants die back naturally in autumn, forming buds that sink to the bottom of the pond and rise again in spring to form new growth. It develops at a moderate pace rather than spreading aggressively, which keeps it manageable in smaller ponds and container water features.
