Suited to pond margins and boggy ground where the soil stays constantly wet, this Louisiana iris gives the water's edge a striking show of large, near-black purple blooms in early summer. Supplied already potted in its mesh aquatic basket, it goes straight into position without extra repotting. Because the tubers are poisonous if swallowed, keep the basket out of reach of children and pets.
Iris louisiana 'Black Gamecock' is a marginal pond iris grown for its giant, deep purple blooms that open almost black, which is the plant's standout feature.
As a true Louisiana iris it thrives in constantly moist soil, so it suits planting directly on a pond's marginal shelf or in a boggy border. It provides a strong early-summer colour display at the pond edge once established.
You receive one established plant, already rooted into its mesh aquatic basket, in either a 1 litre or 3 litre size. Both sizes go straight from the basket into the pond without repotting.
If growth pushes past the top of its height range, you may need to move it into a larger basket or plant it into gravel to stop it toppling in wind; neither is supplied with the plant.
What sets it apart is how little aftercare it needs: once the foliage dies back in autumn, cutting it back to just above the water surface is enough to keep it tidy for the following year.
The tubers are poisonous if swallowed, so site the basket where children and pets can't get at it.
