Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the 1 litre and 3 litre plants?

Both are the same plant, supplied in a mesh aquatic basket sized to match: a 1 litre basket for the smaller option and a 3 litre basket for the larger one. The 3 litre plant is more established and can sit straight on the pond shelf, while the 1 litre plant is a more budget-friendly start that can be moved to a bigger basket later as it grows.

How deep should I plant it?

Start new plants no deeper than around half the maximum recommended planting depth so the roots can establish, then lower them to the full recommended depth of 0-20 cm once settled.

Is this plant safe to have around pets?

The tubers are harmful if eaten, as with all iris, so it's worth keeping that in mind for ponds that pets or children can reach.

Does it need repotting when it arrives?

No. Both the 1 litre and 3 litre plants come in their mesh aquatic basket and can go straight into the pond as they are.

This marginal iris carries broad green leaves and soft cream-toned flowers, giving pond keepers a gentler-coloured option than the ordinary yellow flag iris. It suits sunny or partly shaded planting spots at the pond edge and settles in quickly once placed in its basket. Each plant comes ready-potted in its own mesh aquatic basket, so it goes straight into the water without repotting.

Iris pseudacorus bastardii is a marginal pond iris valued for its pale cream flowers, a quieter-coloured take on the familiar yellow flag iris (Iris pseudacorus). It gives pond keepers a softer flowering colour at the water's edge without losing the upright growth habit of the standard flag iris.

It suits planting at the pond margin or on a planting shelf, in anything from full sun to part shade, and settles in quickly after planting so the basket fills out without a long wait. Foliage dies back naturally over winter and returns the following year.

What you get: one plant supplied in its own mesh aquatic basket, already potted and ready to go straight into the water. The basket size matches the option you choose, a 1 litre basket for the smaller plant or a 3 litre basket for the larger one, and there's no need to remove the mesh or repot before planting.
