Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to repot the plant when it arrives?

It depends on the size. The 9cm potted plants need potting into a mesh aquatic basket before planting. The 1 litre and 3 litre sizes arrive already in a mesh basket and don't need repotting, though the 1 litre can be moved into a larger basket for extra root room if you prefer.

How deep can I plant it?

The stated planting depth range is 0-20cm, but newly planted baskets should start shallower (around a third of the maximum depth for 9cm plants, around half for 1 litre plants) so the plant can establish before being moved deeper.

Is it safe around pets or children?

The tubers are harmful if eaten, as is the case with other iris species, so it's worth siting the plant where pets or children with pond access can't easily reach and chew the roots.

When does it flower and what colour are the flowers?

It flowers in June and July, with yellow blooms, as shown in the specification table above.

How should I care for it after flowering?

Once the foliage has died back in autumn, cut the plant back to just above the water surface. If you leave trimming until spring instead, take care not to damage the emerging shoots.

Iris pseudacorus is the only native aquatic iris, the plant whose flower is linked to the Fleur-de-lys emblem long associated with French royalty. It suits pond margins, bog gardens and boggy soil, where it helps establish cover quickly and gives pond edges colour through its flowering season. Choose a 1 litre or 3 litre basket-grown plant for an established specimen, or a pack of three 9cm pots for planting in groups.

Iris pseudacorus is the only native aquatic iris, and the plant behind the Fleur-de-lys, the emblem long linked to French royalty. Planted at a pond margin or in boggy soil, it fills out quickly and brings colour to the water's edge each flowering season.

It suits anyone planting up a pond margin, bog garden or boggy border who wants a true native marginal rather than a non-native alternative. Because it can grow vigorously once settled, it's worth giving it room to spread, or keeping it contained within its basket if space is limited.

What you get depends on the size ordered. The 1 litre and 3 litre options each provide one plant already growing in its own mesh aquatic basket, ready to go straight onto a pond shelf. The 9cm pot option provides a pack of three plants, each in its own small pot, useful for planting in groups across a margin or bog garden bed.

Its native status and taller growth habit set it apart from many other marginals, making it a good choice for the back of a planting scheme or a deeper shelf, provided it's kept within its recommended planting depth.
