Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to repot the plant when it arrives?

No. Both the 1 litre and 3 litre sizes can go straight into the pond in their mesh basket, with no need to remove it or repot.

How deep should I plant it?

The recommended planting depth is 0 to 15cm. Start at around half the maximum recommended depth so the plant can establish, then move it to its final depth.

When does it flower?

It flowers in June and July, producing bluish-purple blooms with a spotted yellow throat.

What should I do if the plant grows taller than 60cm?

Move it into a larger mesh basket, or plant it into gravel, to stop it falling over in a breeze.

Suitable for planting in the margins or on the shallow shelves of a garden pond, Iris versicolor offers narrow, upright foliage and branched stems of bluish-purple flowers with a distinctive spotted yellow throat through June and July. It's supplied as a single plant already growing in its mesh aquatic basket, so it goes straight into the water without repotting. Choose from 1 litre and 3 litre basket sizes depending on how established a plant you want to start with.

Iris versicolor is a marginal pond plant with narrow, erect foliage and branched stems that each carry several bluish-purple flowers, with a spotted yellow throat marking the centre of each bloom.

It suits the margins and shallow shelves of a garden pond, growing best in a position with full sun to part shade, and flowers during June and July. The plant helps bring colour and height to the pond edge through that period, with blooms held above the foliage on branching stems.

You receive one plant, already growing in its mesh aquatic basket at the size you choose: 1 litre or 3 litre. Neither size needs repotting on arrival, and there's no need to remove the basket before placing the plant in the pond.

Growth is slow, which means less frequent dividing or cutting back compared with more vigorous marginals. Expect the plant to reach 60 to 90cm in height once established, with a recommended planting depth of 0 to 15cm.
