Frequently Asked Questions

Where should I plant Lagenandra meeboldii 'Red' in my tank?

In the midground, positioned the same way you'd place a Cryptocoryne species.

Why aren't my leaves showing much red or violet colour?

The plant needs reasonably strong lighting to develop its violet and red-violet tones. Under lower light it tends to stay more dusty green.

How big do the leaves get?

Leaves typically reach 4-8cm wide and 6-12cm long, giving the plant a noticeably broad profile once established.

Is this plant easy to care for?

Yes, it's rated as easy to care for, which suits both newer and more experienced planted-tank keepers.

What exactly do I receive when I order this?

A pack of five pots of Lagenandra meeboldii 'Red'.

A broad-leaved aquarium plant native to India, suited to the middle zone of a planted tank where it gives the layout a splash of colour against smaller foreground species. Under reasonably strong lighting it develops dusty green, violet and red-violet tones, with new leaves emerging pale pink. It's a good option whether you already grow Cryptocoryne species or are trying your first coloured aquarium plant.

Lagenandra meeboldii 'Red' is a broad-leaved aquarium plant from India that behaves much like a medium-sized Cryptocoryne, but stands apart for its colouring, which can shift from dusty green through bright violet to red-violet, often on the same leaf. The contrast helps break up an otherwise green-dominated layout.

Leaves grow 4 to 8cm wide and 6 to 12cm long, so the plant takes on a noticeably wide, fuller profile once established. New leaves open pale pink before darkening into the plant's mature colouring.

Colour intensity depends on light. Reasonably strong lighting is needed to bring out the violet and red-violet shades; under weaker light the plant is likely to stay closer to green.

It's used in the aquarium the same way as Cryptocoryne species, making it straightforward to work into an existing midground planting scheme.

What you get: a pack of five pots of Lagenandra meeboldii 'Red', ready to plant into your substrate.
