Frequently Asked Questions

Does it only grow as a tight carpet, or can it get taller?

It can grow more sparsely or taller if light is limited; the tight, 4 to 7 cm lawn effect only forms under high light intensity.

Can I use it outside the aquarium?

Yes, it also grows in garden ponds and tolerates low salt concentrations, so it works in lightly brackish aquariums too.

How should I plant it for the best coverage?

Plant small clumps, around an eighth of a pot, spaced a few centimetres apart. This helps the clumps grow together into a solid carpet more quickly than planting fewer, larger pieces.

Is it difficult to grow?

No, it's rated as an easy plant, suiting both newer and more experienced aquarium keepers.

What's the difference between the potted and 1-2-Grow! options?

Both give you the same plant in a different starting format: a pack of five pots you divide by hand, or a pack of three 1-2-Grow! cultures you separate into small portions before planting the same way.

A fine, grass-like plant that forms a dense green lawn across the base of a planted aquarium, giving aquascapers a low, natural-looking base layer instead of bare substrate. It suits open, well-lit tank layouts, garden ponds and lightly brackish setups, and establishes faster when planted as small clumps spaced a few centimetres apart.

Lilaeopsis brasiliensis is a fine, grass-like plant grown to form a dense green lawn across the base of a planted aquarium. Under strong lighting it stays compact, reaching just 4 to 7 centimetres tall, which helps keep the front of the tank low and tidy without constant trimming.

Plant small clumps, around an eighth of a pot at a time, and space them a few centimetres apart so they knit together into a full carpet more quickly. Position the planting area where it won't be shaded by taller plants, since consistent light is what drives the tight, lawn-like growth.

It isn't limited to aquariums either: it also grows in garden ponds and tolerates low salt concentrations, making it a workable option for lightly brackish setups where many low-growing plants struggle. You get the plant supplied either as a pack of five pots or as a pack of three 1-2-Grow! cultures, depending on the format you choose.
