Matteuccia struthiopteris suits damp, shaded borders where moisture-loving foliage is needed. Its arching, pale green fronds form a rosette that helps bring structure and height to shady corners through the growing season. You receive three plants, each supplied in a 9cm pot, ready for planting into damp ground.

Matteuccia struthiopteris is a fern grown for its pale green fronds, which arch outward from a central crown into the tiered, upright shape that gives it its shuttlecock-like look. It has also received the RHS Award of Garden Merit, the Royal Horticultural Society's mark for plants that perform reliably in UK gardens.

It suits shaded parts of the garden, anywhere from partial to full shade, where many other plants struggle for light. Keep the ground consistently damp but never waterlogged, in a sheltered spot, and it grows quickly, filling out with fresh foliage over the season.

Mature plants reach a height that adds real vertical structure to a shaded bed, without needing a sunny aspect to perform. This fern is grown purely for its foliage; it does not flower.

You get three plants in this pack, each supplied in its own 9cm pot. Remove each one from its pot and plant into prepared, damp ground, in a hole large enough to take the root ball comfortably.

Once established, trim away old or tired foliage as needed to keep the clump looking tidy.
