Frequently Asked Questions

Is this an easy plant for a beginner tank?

Not really. It needs CO2 injection, strong light, water movement and regular fertilising to establish well, which puts it beyond a basic low-tech setup.

How do I get it to carpet the tank floor?

Plant small clumps a few centimetres apart across the substrate. Given the right conditions it spreads and fills in as a low, dense carpet over time.

Why does it need trimming?

If it's left to grow unchecked, the lower leaves get shaded out and the roots can die back, so regular trimming keeps the carpet healthy.

What's the difference between the Potted and 1-2-Grow! options?

Both are the same plant. Potted is a pack of five pots and 1-2-Grow! is a pack of three tissue-culture cups; the growth stage in each format isn't detailed, so choose whichever is available to you.

A tiny-leaved carpeting plant that creeps across the substrate rather than growing tall, suited to planting at the front of small aquariums. It helps build a dense, natural-looking carpet, provided you can give it strong light, CO2 and regular fertilising. Supplied as a pack of five pots or a pack of three 1-2-Grow! cups.

Micranthemum callitrichoides 'Cuba' is one of the smallest aquarium plants available, forming a creeping mat of round leaves that are just millimetres wide. Rather than growing upward, it spreads across the substrate, which helps keep the front of the tank low and open so taller plants and hardscape stay the visual focus. It suits planting at the front of small aquariums where a dense, low carpet is the look you're after.

It needs good light, CO2 injection, water circulation and regular fertilising to establish well, so it suits tanks already set up for demanding plants rather than a first low-tech aquarium. Small pearls of oxygen often form on the leaf surface during the day, which adds a lively look to an established carpet.

Plant small clumps a few centimetres apart directly into the substrate; given the right conditions, it spreads quickly and knits together into a full carpet. Trim it back regularly, as leaving it to grow unchecked shades out the lower leaves and can cause the roots to die off.

What you get is the plant supplied as a pack of five pots or a pack of three 1-2-Grow! cups, depending on which option you choose; the equipment needed to grow it, such as CO2 gear, lighting and fertiliser, isn't included. It originates from Cuba, west of Havana. If your setup can't provide the light and CO2 it needs, Micranthemum 'Monte Carlo' is noted as a less demanding alternative for a similar carpet effect.
