Frequently Asked Questions

How fast does this plant grow?

Slowly at first, but it picks up pace once established, so you'll need to pinch and trim it fairly regularly after that.

Does it need CO2 to survive?

No, but adding CO2 helps it grow faster.

How should I plant it?

In a close group of several stems rather than as a single sprig, which gives the fullest result. Pinched-out cuttings can also be replanted directly into the substrate.

Will it do well in a low-light tank?

It needs decent light to grow well, so it may grow slowly or struggle in a dimly lit setup.

What size aquarium does it suit?

Both small and large aquariums, since it can be kept as a single clump or grown in larger groups depending on the space you have.

A fine-stemmed aquarium plant with small, rounded leaves, suited to both small and large tanks. Grown as a group, it fills in quickly and gives a dense, naturalistic look once it settles in.

Micranthemum umbrosum is a fine-stemmed aquarium plant valued for its small, rounded leaves and the dense, bushy clumps it forms when grown in numbers. It suits both small and large tanks. Grown as a group, it fills in quickly and gives your layout a lush, naturalistic fill once established.

Left to grow, the stems reach around 10 to 25 cm in length and 1 to 2 cm across. Growth stays modest to begin with, then speeds up noticeably once the plant settles in, at which point the tips need pinching out fairly regularly to stop it turning straggly. The cuttings you remove can be replanted straight into the substrate to start new clumps.

This plant asks for more light than many easier aquarium species, and it responds well to added CO2, which pushes growth along further. Tanks with lower light may see it establish more slowly, so it suits keepers who can offer brighter conditions.

For the best look, plant it in a close group of many stems rather than a single sprig. That clumping habit, paired with its fine round leaf shape, is what sets it apart from coarser, broader-leaved aquarium plants.

What you get: a pack of five pots of Micranthemum umbrosum, supplied ready to divide and plant into your substrate.
