Frequently Asked Questions

Is Murdannia keisak actually a grass?

No. Despite its bamboo-like appearance, it is a true stem plant, not a grass.

How often will I need to trim it?

The plant grows quickly, so the longest shoots need ongoing cutting back to stop the group becoming leggy and to keep it looking full.

Will the stems turn red?

The stem apex becomes reddish when the plant is grown with CO2 injection and strong lighting. Without both of those conditions, it is likely to stay green.

Can I use the trimmed cuttings to grow more plants?

Yes. The tops removed when trimming can be replanted to build up a fuller, more varied group.

What format does the plant come in?

It is supplied potted and ready to plant into substrate. This is the only format available.

Murdannia keisak gives planted-tank keepers a stem plant with a bamboo-like look, though it's not a true grass, and its upright growth fills out the back of a tank as it branches with regular trimming. It suits aquascapers who enjoy shaping a fast-growing plant, since cutting back encourages bushier regrowth and the trimmed tops can be replanted to build up the group. Supplied potted and ready to plant, it's a flexible choice for adding depth to a layered background.

Murdannia keisak looks like a miniature bamboo stem, but it is a true stem plant rather than a grass, which is what sets its appearance apart from similar-looking background plants. In the wild it is often found growing in rice fields, and in a tank it keeps that same upright growth habit as it fills in behind other planting.

Left to grow, it does so quickly, so regular trimming is part of keeping it looking good: cut stems branch out rather than leaving bare lower sections, and the tops removed during trimming can be replanted to multiply the group and vary its look. Under CO2 injection and strong lighting the stem apex takes on a reddish tinge, adding some colour contrast against the plant's light green leaves.

What you get is a pack of five pots of Murdannia keisak, supplied ready to plant into substrate. It helps keepers build a varied, layered background without needing to source multiple separate plants, since cuttings from the same pot can be replanted as it grows.
